6 Reasons To Adopt A Senior Dog

November 2, 2021
It’s Adopt A Senior Pet Month! This is one cause that definitely deserves some attention. Older dogs often have a very difficult time getting adopted. That’s really sad, because they have some great qualities and can make wonderful animal companions. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some benefits of adopting a senior dog.

Calmer Pet

Puppies are absolutely adorable, but they’re also a lot of work. Baby dogs are basically furry, four-legged bundles of mischief! Older pooches have already burned off most of their zoomies, and generally prefer taking a good nap to chasing the cat around. Fido also won’t need as much playtime or exercise as a younger dog, which makes things easier on you.

Budget-Friendly

Many shelters offer discounted rates on senior dogs as an incentive to help them get adopted. Fido will also most likely be fixed already. What’s not to love about saving money?

No Surprises

When you get a puppy, you really never know for sure exactly what your furry friend will look like as an adult, or what his personality will be. There’s no guesswork with older dogs: what you see is exactly what you get. The shelter or foster may also be able to provide information about your canine pal’s history and temperament.

Great Resume

By the time Fido reaches his golden years, he should have a pretty good idea of the do’s and don’ts of being a good boy. He will also most likely already know basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, and Come, and should be house-trained. Being able to skip all that training is a definite plus!

Kindness

Sometimes helping others is the best thing we can do for ourselves. Giving that sweet senior pooch a happy retirement may turn out to be extremely rewarding, and is something you can feel great about. It’s a beautiful feeling seeing an old dog peacefully snoring in his bed, and knowing that he feels safe, comfortable and loved.

Love

Older dogs tend to have very sweet and lovable personalities. They really just want someone to love them and care for them. You’ll be repaid for your kindness with love, loyalty, and tail wags. Those are all very precious gifts! Please contact Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA pet hospital, for your senior dog’s veterinary care needs. We’re here for you!
