Preparing Your Home for a Puppy

November 1, 2015
Are you about to bring a brand new puppy into your household? Puppies are a lot of fun, but they’re also extremely rambunctious and mischievous. Use these tips from your Savannah, GA veterinarian at Westside Animal Hospital to prepare your home for your pup’s arrival.

Remove Physical Hazards

Walk through every room in the home that your puppy will be allowed in and take steps to remove any physical hazards. These may include small items that could be choked on, loose wires or electrical cords, sharp edges or objects, and tight spaces that a pup could get stuck in. Also remove any decorative plants that you don’t want your puppy nibbling on; some, like aloe plants, lilies, or elephant ear, may even be toxic.

Clean the Counters

While it’s not likely that your puppy will have the height to jump up on the kitchen table or countertops, creative pups can manage to swipe down morsels they find there. Never leave harmful foods out where pets could reach them. The list of harmful foods for dogs includes grapes and raisins, onions, avocado, chocolate, candy, caffeinated items, salty foods, and alcoholic substances.

Lock Medicine Cabinets

Did you know that various human medications can be very dangerous for pets? Secure your medicine cabinet so that a puppy can’t access aspirin, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, antidepressants, or any other form of medication. Remember: a determined puppy may be able to chew right through a child-proof plastic cap!

Store Your Valuables

Anyone who has owned a puppy can attest: they tend to be a bit like a mini tornado. It’s a good idea to put away any breakable or valuable items until your puppy is a bit older. Also make sure to pick items that you don’t want chewed up off of the floor (shoes, pursues, etc.).

Hold a Family Meeting

It’s important that all members of your household know the protocol for your puppy’s training, commands, play routine, dietary needs and portion sizes, and rules of the house. Hold a family meeting before your puppy arrives home so that all family members have the information they need. Does your new family member need an examination, vaccinations, or preventative pest control products? Do you have further questions on raising a well-mannered puppy? Set up an appointment with your Savannah, GA veterinarian at Westside Animal Hospital to start your pup’s life off on the right paw.
